Keeping track of your car’s braking system can be difficult if you aren’t sure how long brake pads are supposed to last. If you don’t know, don’t worry. The truth is most drivers don’t know how long their brake pads will last due to a number of factors including driving habits and climate. Fortunately, even the most inexperienced drivers can pick up on the following signs you need new brakes.

  • Grinding – If your brakes are making a grinding or growling sound, make a service appointment immediately. Both of these sounds are caused by metal scraping against metal which means your brake pads are completely gone. If left alone, your rotors could end up damaged and will need to be replaced sooner rather than later.
  • Vibrating – While it could also indicate the vehicle is out of alignment, a vibrating brake pedal could be a sign of warped rotors. Caused by braking for long periods of time, like when towing, warped rotors won’t allow the brake pads to grab onto the surface evenly and reduce braking effectiveness.
  • Squealing – If you hear a loud squealing when braking, make a service appointment. This is one of the most obvious warning signs your brake pads are almost gone and it’s important to get replacement pads sooner rather than later to avoid damaging the braking system.
